Portrait of the Park

Detached youth arts work & park community exhibition, Bristol.

Commissioned by Friends of Greville Smyth Park to engage and work with young people visiting a local park in the evenings. Using arts intervention in this public space, Once engaged this marginalised user group in a dialogue around issues of ownership and shared environments in regular sessions over 2 years.

The project concluded with "Portrait of the Park", an open air photographic exhibition of over 200 park users. The images were taken in the park over the summer months, documenting various different "portrait" methods, including a portable frame, decorating a cake in your image and writing personal park statements on a blackboard.

All of this work was achieved using unadvertised arts interventions, engaging with the young people, where and when they inhabited the public park space.
